Detailed Information

I’m Susan Bass, Ayurvedic Educator, teaching at my own school, The Sarasvati Institute, as well as at the North Carolina College of Natural Medicine (NCCNM) and the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM).

We’re told early in life that we each have a purpose. To me someone’s purpose is their soul’s deepest desire, their gift to share with the world. For some, discovering what that is might happen with ease. For most of us, the dream reveals itself slowly if we can first create the environment for it to flower.

That’s why I do this work today!

The dream of who I could be and what that could look like was revealed to me a little at a time through the practice of Yoga and Ayurveda. These teachings created fertile ground for my dreams to break through the darkness, and to see the light of day.
As a child, I grew up on soy baby formula, vaccines, antibiotics, allergy shots and processed food. My life was a constant stream of allergic reactions, ear infections and stomach aches. My digestion had been seriously impaired by the toxins in these modern day “conveniences” and “remedies.”

There were so many of us like this in the South where I was raised, it was considered normal. But, I knew it was not normal. My skin was red and irritated, my stomach was torn up, and my nerves were frayed. I felt allergic to the world around me; felt like a canary in the coalmine. I was incapable of having the energy to do anything, let alone act on a dream that lived inside my soul. What dream? I only wanted to end my suffering.

In 1999, I did my first Ayurvedic cleanse. For 12 days, I gave my body soothing foods based on my body type and the season. I also incorporated time tested daily practices from this ancient system for the purpose of improving overall health and well being. I breathed deeply and soaked up nature. I relaxed and gave my trust to the wisdom of the oldest continuously practiced health care system in the world, Ayurveda. For the first time ever, my body came alive. I saw life with a new pair eyes.

Next thing I knew, I was fearlessly leaving my position at The Wall Street Journal to study Yoga and to become an Ayurvedic Practitioner, Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist & Ayurvedic Nutritional Consultant. Ayurveda had given me hope, inspiration and awakened me to my dream, my dream to be part of a process that nurtures others in transforming their entire existence.

I had searched so long for a way to heal my body, mind and soul and I had finally found it. All I wanted was to share it with others… I HAD to!

I studied at The Kripalu School of Ayurveda, The Ayurvedic Institute, North Carolina College of Natural Medicine and Maharishi University, as well as, worked as the Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist in a Panchakarma clinic to complete over three thousand hours of study in Ayurveda, Yoga and Nutritional Consulting. Since then, I’ve led hundreds of motivated souls to explore what it feels like to have a body/mind/soul that isn’t raging war against itself.

Ayurveda is a time tested science that helps us heal ourselves by reconnecting with nature, inside and out. It peels off layers of trauma, removes doubt and builds our stamina when we need it most. Those are just a few emotional benefits… the physical rewards are amazing–vibrant hair, glowing skin, heightened senses, weight loss, less pain, etc. Ayurveda and Yoga are ancient, sacred healing paths that help people connect to their internal source of power.

I loved reading through all the reviews of Susan and her program. They are spot on.I had no previous Yoga experience... and had no idea what Ayurveda was before meeting Susan. I have a Bachelor's in Biochemistry and have always been fascinated with how things work down to the cellular level. I have always had a passion for wellness and healing. Before her program, I was constantly second guessing myself. Am I doing this right? Did I make the right choice? What if, what if, what if...Through her ability to hold space and go deep with true cellular healing, I am becoming more certain of myself and my choices. I am learning what my body and spirit need on a day to day basis through the seasons. I am learning that rest is just as important, maybe even more important than work. It does not halt your progress, it is necessary and helps it.My college experience was difficult. I pushed myself hard. All that internal fire, I suppose. Constantly, mindlessly memorizing for exams. In her 300HR program, Susan breaks down the complex knowledge of Ayurveda so beautifully and simply. I was blown away how I so effortlessly integrated the information. I am truly learning with her program. I began in August 2019, so the first 7 months where in person and the last 5 were online due to COVID. She did such a wonderful job transitioning to online. Her authenticity shines through her online training.I am enrolled to begin her 200HR Chakra Yoga program in January and am so excited! She is a rare gem in this world and I am beyond grateful to be her student. I highly recommend her program. There has never been a better time to be our own advocates in our healing and wellbeing. She will hold your hand on the journey.read more

I was fortunate to enroll in the 300 hour program with Susan Bass for the 2019 year. Coming from a medical background I... felt that traditional medical practice did not allow for true wellness. Susan is a gifted teacher, who makes sense of the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the intimate connection between the mind and body. Her well-rounded program covers yoga, meditation, herbal therapy, diet and lifestyle. I have attended various meeting and workshops on Mind Body Medicine, Nutrition, Alternative Medicine, etc over the years. None of them compare with the knowledge I gained from this program. I feel fortunate to have found this program. I highly recommend it to anyone, including (and especially!) those who work in the health care field. Thank you, Susan, for your teaching and guidance.read more

The Spring Cleanse with Susan was a totally positive, healing experience. It was wonderful for me in all ways and... remarkably, it seems to have been positively transformational for my husband who hadn't really intended to participate but rather to be my support team. Apparently, he must have been thinking that all the things I have been doing and do for my health are entirely because I have health challenges. Somehow he didn’t really get that routine maintenance is required! Susan Bass explained things so that he really understands so much better the way his body works and what it needs to function well. He has loved the food too. He was certain he would be struggling if he went without meat for 12 days. He hasn’t missed it at all—has had plenty to eat and felt well-satisfied with good, even energy throughout. And he has lost almost 10 lbs!! We have already signed up for the Fall Cleanse with Susan. THANK YOU Susan!read more
