About Dr. Christine Tara Peterson

Dr. Christine Tara Peterson received her PhD in Immunology & Microbiology from the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at the George Washington University School of Medicine where she studied the gut microbiome in sub-therapeutic antibiotic-induced obesity using a Systems Biology approach. Dr. Peterson is also a graduate of the California College of Ayurveda’s Clinical Ayurvedic Practitioner program and a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA). As a UCSD Fellow, Dr. Peterson is developing herbal and microbial medicines consisting of probiotics and combination therapies of probiotics, prebiotics and Ayurvedic herbs termed synbiotics. Dr. Peterson is engaged in dietary supplement intervention-based Clinical Trials and microbiota analyses related to immunosenescence and inflammaging in the elderly (UCSD Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center) and the screening and testing of prebiotics and probiotics for the therapeutic modulation of human microbiomes in the context of neurodegenerative disease and gut-related disorders. Dr. Peterson is currently focused on mechanistic research in neurodegenerative and gut-related disease, neuroprotection as it relates to the microbiota-gut-brain axis, and the development of synbiotics for such purposes. These efforts have been extended to include the screening of microbially produced metabolites as potential “drugs” to treat neurodegenerative disease symptoms. She seeks to identify microbial/herb therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases and the co-morbidities associated with improper gut barrier function. Clinically, Dr. Peterson has been focused on Parkinson’s Disease (PD) with a special interest in non-motor symptoms and seeks to develop treatments for both ‘motor off/wearing off’ periods in PD and non-motor symptoms such as cognitive deficits and gastrointestinal symptoms.
